Employment in California
Fueled by booming manufacturing, tech, entertainment, agricultural, and transportation industries, California’s economy is the fifth largest in the world. And yet, the state has the highest poverty rate in the nation at 19%, with people of color disproportionately represented. We see a similar discrepancy in the labor market – the historically tight labor market has made it difficult for employers to fill their entry-level roles; at the same time, employment remains out of reach for many, particularly people of color. These factors present a unique forcing mechanism for California employers to rewire their talent systems and create more opportunities and supports for low-wage workers, while addressing employers’ talent pain points.
California Rewire Lab
In partnership with the James Irvine Foundation, Talent Rewire invites California employers to participate in a 12-month Rewire Lab that will build capacity and reduce barriers for the state’s approximately five million low-wage workers so they can be employed, retained and advanced; and to provide greater economic opportunity for their diverse employees, while addressing a business need.
If you’re a Human Resources, Corporate Social Responsibility, or Operations leader at your company looking for innovative and evidence-based ways to access and retain new pools of talent, the California Rewire Lab is for you! This year-long experience launching in March 2020 is a low-cost, low-risk opportunity that will inspire and support you to get the results you need to address your most pressing talent issues.
California Workforce Providers
For the first time, Workforce Providers are invited to join the Lab with the aim of learning new tools and techniques to strategically engage employers. To learn more download the provider one-pager
Change is hard, but we can help. Through the Rewire Lab, you will:
Build your capacity to innovate new talent strategies that improve recruitment, retention, and/or advancement at your company
Design and implement a pilot that you can learn from and eventually scale
Receive coaching support and resources to support you with pilot implementation, data analysis, and evaluation
Talent Rewire’s Innovation Labs are the most promising approach I’ve seen for engaging and supporting employers who are changing their practices to respond to shifting demographics to meet their talent needs. This team is doing impressive, systems-changing work. Gap Inc. started This Way Ahead more than 10 years ago to hire and retain Opportunity Youth. We are still innovating and evolving our program today, and have collaborated with Talent Rewire to share our practices with other employers, keep learning, and stay connected to -- and inspired by -- the larger movement of employers engaged in this work.
Executive Director of Community Leadership
The Innovation Lab has been like an accelerator to this process, forcing us to intentionally invest in partnerships and connecting us with valuable support resources. There is no way that we would be where we are today with regards to supporting impact hires without the Lab journey.
SVP of People
Being a part of FSG’s Innovation Lab has been incredibly energizing for me personally and for my team. Our work with the Lab has given my team greater purpose and clarified how we can make our business goals around diversity and inclusion a reality.
